Afton is located in southwest Iowa in Union County. We have the small town comfort with bigger cities close by. Creston is ten minutes to the west – Interstate 35 is twenty minutes to the east, and Des Moines metropolitan one hour to the north.
Afton, a city of 874 in the center of Union County, is the gateway to Southwest Iowa’s newest and biggest recreation area. Three Mile Lake, situated just northwest of Afton, is an 880-acre recreational area providing water skiing, fishing, camping and much more. Twelve-Mile Lake, which is located just west of Afton, is a 640-acre lake that provides some of the finest fishing in Iowa. Since Afton is on the eastern edge of both of these lakes, we are perfectly situated to accommodate the thousands that will come to visit this recreational jewel of Iowa. In addition to the lakes for recreation we also have a 9 hole golf course that is located just west of Afton along the Afton Lake.
United Farmers Cooperative’s office is located on the square. The retail sector is represented by a thrift store, convenience store, local newspaper, Attorney offices, insurance office, beauty shops, restaurants, a boutique, bank, post office, tire company, auto repair shop, funeral home, meat locker, laundromat, car wash, bait shop and vet clinic. We also have a chief of police, a volunteer fire department & rescue team.
Afton is the home to East Union Community School district which serves Arispe, Lorimor, Thayer, Afton, Shannon City, and the surrounding area. Our school district is small enough to provide individual support to our students, at the same time being large enough to provide our students with the newest in educational opportunities and technology.
Afton was established in 1854 as a railroad community and with its prominent position as the gateway to Three Mile Lake, we will continue to be a strong community in the center of Union County
